Fredericksburg

The Best Things to Do in Fredericksburg, Texas

Fredericksburg would be worth visiting without a single vineyard. It is a preserved German settlement with a working Main Street, it sits eighteen miles from one of the most striking geological features in Texas, and it has a museum that would be notable in a city fifty times its size. Here is everything else worth doing, roughly in the order we would recommend fitting it in.

    Enchanted Rock State Natural Area

A massive pink granite dome rising several hundred feet above the surrounding country, eighteen miles north of town. The summit hike is short — under a mile each way — but genuinely steep, and the view from the top runs for miles in every direction. It is the single best thing to do in the area that does not involve a glass.

    • Entry reservations are required and regularly sell out, particularly on weekends. Book ahead on the state parks site.
    • Go early. The rock absorbs heat and by two in the afternoon in summer the surface is genuinely punishing.
    • Wear real shoes. The granite is smooth and the pitch is steeper than it looks from the parking lot.
    • It is one of the better dark-sky spots in central Texas if you can get an evening slot.

The National Museum of the Pacific War

Admiral Chester Nimitz was born in Fredericksburg, and the museum built around that connection has grown into one of the most comprehensive accounts of the Pacific theater anywhere. It occupies several buildings downtown, including the historic Nimitz Hotel. Allow at least two hours; three is more realistic. Even people who arrived for wine tend to come out impressed.

    Main Street

A genuinely good afternoon of walking. Limestone storefronts, independent shops rather than chains, several tasting rooms, and the Marktplatz square in the middle with the reconstructed Vereins Kirche. Best between four and six, when the light is good and the shops are still open.

    • The Pioneer Museum on Main covers the German settlement story in a set of restored buildings.
    • The Marktplatz hosts markets and events, and is lit up for Christmas.
    • Most shops close by five or six, earlier than the restaurants.

    Austin Wine Car

Wine in the day, town in the evening

Our Fredericksburg days finish in time for Main Street. Three wineries, door-to-door from Austin.

    Not ready to book?

    Luckenbach

Ten minutes southeast: a general store, a dancehall, a post office, and a cluster of oak trees where people sit in a circle and play guitars. Population is famously three. It is small, unpolished, and completely worth the twenty minutes, particularly in the late afternoon when the picking circle gets going.

    The LBJ Ranch

In Stonewall, fifteen minutes east on the wine corridor. The Texas White House, the ranch Lyndon Johnson ran the country from for stretches of his presidency, now a National Historical Park. You can drive the property, see the house and the airstrip, and visit the reconstructed birthplace. It slots neatly into a 290 wine day because it is directly on the route.

    Old Tunnel State Park

An abandoned railroad tunnel south of town that is now home to a colony of Mexican free-tailed bats. From roughly May through October, they emerge at dusk in a column that goes on for several minutes. It is the smallest state park in Texas and one of the more memorable evenings available in the Hill Country. Check the season and viewing schedule before you go.

    Peaches, in season

Gillespie County peaches run roughly May through August, and the roadside stands along 290 are a real part of the local calendar. Das Peach Haus, Vogel Orchard, and Burg's Corner all sell fruit picked that week, plus cobbler, ice cream, and preserves. Some orchards allow picking. It is the best twenty-minute stop on the corridor in summer.

    Wildseed Farms

A working wildflower seed farm on 290 east of town, with fields you can walk, a market, a butterfly house, and a small tasting area. Spectacular in April when the bluebonnets and poppies are up, pleasant the rest of the year, and free to walk around.

    Other things worth knowing about

    Hye · 20 min east

    Garrison Brothers Distillery

Texas bourbon made on a beautiful ranch property, with a genuinely good tour. A strong palate reset in the middle of a wine day.

    Just off Main

    Fredericksburg Herb Farm

Gardens, a shop, a spa, and a restaurant. A quiet hour, and a good option when the weather is too hot for the rock.

    North of town

    Cross Mountain Park

A short walk up to a cross on a hill with a wide view over Fredericksburg. Ten minutes of effort for a genuinely good vista.

    Northeast, near Llano

    Willow City Loop

A thirteen-mile ranch road that is one of the best wildflower drives in Texas in April. Private land on both sides, so stay in the car or on the shoulder.

    South of town

    Lady Bird Johnson Municipal Park

Golf, disc golf, a pool, and open space. Useful if your group includes people who are done with tasting rooms.
