The Best Wine Destinations Near Austin

Not every wine day should look the same. A first date, a bachelorette party, a birthday with your parents, and a trip with two friends who read wine magazines all want different things, and the destinations around Austin are genuinely different from one another. This guide is about matching the place to the occasion rather than ranking them against each other.

    Dripping Springs & Driftwood

    Drive from Austin
    35–45 minutes
    Character
    Family-run, agricultural, unhurried
    Best for
First wine days, relaxed groups, wine plus BBQ
    The anchor
Duchman, Fall Creek Driftwood, The Salt Lick

The closest real wine country to Austin, and the destination we send most first-timers to. The wineries are smaller and more personal than the Fredericksburg estates, the drive is short enough that a late start does not ruin the day, and the surrounding area has an unusual concentration of good non-wine stops — The Salt Lick for BBQ, Jester King for beer and pizza, Treaty Oak and Desert Door for spirits. It is the most flexible destination on this list.

What you give up: grandeur. If your group is picturing sweeping Tuscan estates and a wedding-venue level of polish, this is not it. What you get instead is a day where you can actually talk to the person pouring.

    Fredericksburg

    Drive from Austin
    90 minutes
    Character
    Polished estates, resort-scale hospitality
    Best for
    Celebrations, bachelorettes, big groups, weekends
    The anchor
Grape Creek, Augusta Vin, Signor, Barons Creek

The heart of Texas wine country and the destination that most looks like what people picture when they say wine country. The estates ringing town are big, beautifully kept, and built for groups. Main Street adds German bakeries, beer halls, and a genuinely good afternoon of shopping. If the day is an occasion — a birthday, a bachelorette, in-laws visiting from out of state — Fredericksburg is the answer.

What you give up: three hours of your day to the round trip. That is the honest trade, and it is why the Fredericksburg day needs an earlier start than people expect.

    Austin Wine Car

Ninety minutes each way, none of it your problem

Door-to-door from Austin to Fredericksburg and back. Three wineries and a BBQ or biergarten stop if you want one.

    Stonewall & Hye

    Drive from Austin
    75–90 minutes
    Character
Serious wine, working estates, less polish
    Best for
People who actually care about the wine
    The anchor
William Chris, Pedernales, Becker, Kuhlman, Ron Yates

The twelve miles between Hye and Stonewall on Highway 290 contain the best wine per mile in Texas. This is where the producers who take viticulture seriously have set up, and it is the destination we recommend when someone in the group drinks good wine and is quietly skeptical that Texas can deliver it. Add Garrison Brothers Distillery for a bourbon interlude and the day rounds out nicely.

    Johnson City

    Drive from Austin
    60–70 minutes
    Character
    Small-town, low-key, growing
    Best for
A shorter version of the 290 day
    The anchor
    Lewis Wines, Sandy Road

The gateway to the corridor, and increasingly worth stopping in rather than driving through. Lewis Wines makes some of the most structured wine in the state, the LBJ Ranch is minutes away, and Pedernales Falls State Park is close enough to add a walk to the day. It saves you twenty minutes each way versus Fredericksburg.

    Wimberley

    Drive from Austin
    50 minutes
    Character
    Creek-side village, artsy, slow
    Best for
    Couples, wine plus swimming holes
    The anchor
Blue Hole, Jacob's Well, the square

Fewer wineries than anywhere else on this list, but a genuinely charming town and easy to fold into a Driftwood day. Best in late spring and early fall, when the swimming holes are open and the square is busy on market weekends.

    Spicewood & the Highland Lakes

    Drive from Austin
    60–80 minutes
    Character
    Lake country, quiet, scenic
    Best for
Wine as part of a lake weekend
    The anchor
    Spicewood Vineyards, Torr Na Lochs

A different direction entirely — northwest instead of west — and a different feel. Fewer tasting rooms, more water, and some of the best driving in central Texas along the Willow City Loop and the roads around Lake Travis and Lake Buchanan. Not the pick for a dedicated wine day, but a good one if wine is a component of a broader weekend.
