The Best Weekend Getaways From Austin

The best weekend getaway from Austin depends less on where you go than on what you want the weekend to feel like. A romantic two nights and a bachelorette weekend can happen in the same town and should be planned completely differently. So this guide is sorted by intent rather than by distance.

    For a romantic weekend

    01

    90 minutes west

    Fredericksburg

A historic cottage two blocks off Main Street, a wine day on the 290 corridor, dinner at Otto's, and Enchanted Rock on Sunday morning. It is the default for a reason and it holds up. Book lodging two to three months ahead.

    02

    50 minutes southwest

    Wimberley

Quieter and cheaper. A creek-side cottage, the square, Jacob's Well, and the Driftwood wineries twenty minutes away. Best in spring and early fall.

    03

    45–120 minutes

A ranch stay in the Hill Country

A cabin on acreage with a firepit and no light pollution. The most genuinely restful option and the one that requires the most driving to eat.

    For a group weekend

    01

    90 minutes west

    Fredericksburg

A Sunday house or large guesthouse for six to ten, a wine day, and Main Street in the evening. The estates around town handle groups better than anywhere else in Texas, which matters if there are more than six of you.

    02

    45 minutes south

    New Braunfels and Gruene

Tubing the Guadalupe by day and Gruene Hall at night. The best summer group weekend within an hour of Austin.

    03

    60–80 minutes northwest

A lake house on the Highland Lakes

Boats, a dock, and enough space that nobody has to talk to anyone before ten in the morning. Marble Falls and Lake LBJ are the sweet spot.

    04

    3 hours southwest

    Concan and the Frio

A river cabin, tubing, and Garner State Park. Books a year ahead for peak summer weeks.

    Austin Wine Car

One day of the weekend, handled

We run door-to-door wine days from Austin, Fredericksburg, Dripping Springs, and Wimberley. Four to thirteen guests.

    For the outdoors

    01

    3 hours west

Lost Maples and the western Hill Country

Bigtooth maples that turn genuinely red in November, plus Bandera and the Sabinal River. Go on a weekday in foliage season; the weekends are packed.

    02

    100 minutes northwest

    Enchanted Rock and Fredericksburg

A granite dome with a mile-long summit hike and one of the best dark-sky sites in central Texas, with a town to sleep in thirty minutes away.

    03

    60–70 minutes west

    Pedernales Falls and Johnson City

Layered limestone, good hiking, and the eastern end of the wine corridor. The cheapest Hill Country base.

    04

    7 hours west

    Big Bend

Not really a weekend, but the best national park in Texas and worth building four days around at least once.

    For food and wine

    01

    90 minutes west

    Fredericksburg

The densest concentration of wineries in Texas, German cooking, and Cabernet Grill's all-Texas wine list. The clearest answer on this list.

    02

    80 minutes south

    San Antonio

The Pearl district, a serious Mexican food tradition, and the missions. Underrated as a food weekend and much cheaper than Austin.

    03

    40 minutes southeast

    Lockhart and the BBQ belt

Better as a day than a weekend, but pairing it with a night in San Antonio or Gruene makes a genuinely good eating trip.

    For getting genuinely away

    • Marfa and the Davis Mountains, six and a half hours west — high desert, minimalist art, and the McDonald Observatory.
    • Bandera and the Medina River, ninety minutes southwest — working guest ranches and the Cowboy Capital of the World.
    • Utopia and the Sabinal, two and a half hours — about as quiet as Texas gets.
    • Colorado Bend State Park, two and a half hours northwest — caves, Gorman Falls, and no cell service.

    Choosing by season

    SeasonBest getaway
March–AprilFredericksburg for wildflowers and wine; Brenham for bluebonnets
May–AugustThe Frio, the Guadalupe, or a lake house. Water is the point.
September–OctoberFredericksburg for harvest; Marfa once the desert cools
NovemberLost Maples for foliage; the Hill Country at its clearest
December–FebruaryFredericksburg at Christmas, San Antonio, or Big Bend

    Planning notes

    • Two-night minimums are standard on weekends across the region.
    • Book peak windows early — April and October in the Hill Country, and summer weekends on the rivers.
    • Timed reservations for parks and swimming holes sell out furthest ahead. Book those before the lodging.
    • Leave Austin before four on Friday or after seven, and come back before four on Sunday.
    • Sort out the driving for any day involving tastings before you leave.
